JAA and FAA PPL Training

March 2008

Thank you for your query regarding JAA and FAA PPL flight training. While I run an impartial site and don't make recommendations of flight training organizations I can say that there are several options for you depending on your personal requirements.

If you are looking at gaining the FAA PPL first then I would consider training directly in the USA and returning to Europe after for a conversion. This achieves the desired result of getting the FAA and JAA PPL. There are also several flight schools in the US, particularly in Florida that do have JAA approval and examiners so this could kill two birds with one stone.

I'm currently in the process of building a database of flight schools for the US but I haven't got this completed yet and verified all the information so I would not want to give you some duff info.

The other option is to train at a facility within Europe for your JAA PPL and convert to a US PPL. This will probably be more costly.

Whatever route you take I would suggest doing a complete costing. Training in any foreign country always has hidden costs, particularly the US where visas, accommodation, flights there and back and transport there all need to be considered but if you are looking at an intensive course the weather is typically much better than Europe and the flying is cheaper.

I hope these ideas help. If you have more specific information on your requirements feel free to email again and I'll see what information I can dig out for you.
