Flight School Costs

I have mentioned in several places when paying flight school costs not to pay any money up front and I have received the question as to why it is important to pay in small instalments so hopefully here I can answer this question.
Why must I not pay large sums of money up front? There are two reasons for this and they are both as important as each other.
1. When attending a flying school or club, to receive your pilot training, it is vital that you are comfortable with the environment in that organisation and with your instructors. If you are not then you may want to think about moving on before you get too deep into your training to somewhere you will feel more productive. As the paying customer, and don’t forget you are very valuable to any organisation because of the large amounts involved, you have the right to walk away at any time. If you have paid large amounts of cash it can be difficult to get this back out of them which may slow your progress up elsewhere.
2. Flying schools and clubs are businesses, just like any high street business, except they have huge overhead expenses. Sometimes, and I must add very rarely, these organisations don’t get managed as they should and they fall on hard times. It was seen a couple of times post 9/11 where some organisations went bankrupt. If this happens while you have money in their hands you will not get it back. I saw this happen with a friend of mine and it makes it very difficult to continue with your training.
So what is a good amount of money to pay up front. This depends on what stage of training you are at, but I would say no more than a week’s worth of training. This amount will vary depending on how quickly you are training and what level you are at. Almost no organisation will take payment post training because they need to know you are good for the cash.
I hope this has helped.
